Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, writers of all ages! My name is Julie Martin and I'm the Network Administrator and webmaster here at GoodChatting.com. This is a guide to helping you use the mIRC chat client to join in the fun that is chatting with other writers during the epic event known as National Novel Writing Month.

NaNoWriMo began in 1999, but I only found out about it in 2002. And the first thing I did after signing up was create an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel for other writers participating in this madness.. Where better to congregate than a real-time chat with other writers? Actual people who might be able to tell you that yes, putting a ferret named Maurice into your novel is a good idea! How amazing would that be? How many relationships would it save? Friendships? How many family members would not be motivated to kill their beloved writer? This was an awesome plan.

So I built it and waited for them to come.

I think we had six people, that first year. And though most people's names have been lost to the ravages of time, I will never forget Max and Phoebe (it's LE FROMAGE, damn you!).

By 2005, we were sort of official and eventually, the almighty Russ (NaNo tech dude extraordinaire) set up a Java chat applet to allow people to chat in our little chatroom directly from the NaNoWriMo site.

For November of 2009, we are no longer officially recognized by NaNoWriMo for a variety of reasons, but we were here before we were official and we will be here each and every November, regardless.

So, for those of you who enjoy using the Java applet, you can access that here:

For those of you who would prefer not to run a Java applet but are a little intimidated about using something like mIRC, this guide is for you.
