So when you connect, this mIRC Favorites box will pop up.
Just type in #nanowrimo and then click on Join.
You'll know you've joined the channel when you see this sort of screen (click for a larger version):
So all the actual chat comes in that big white window. The names on the right are the names of all the people in the channel at that moment.
