Welcome to the wonderful world of popups. One of the most popular features of online chat is the ability to use actions. Whether it's hugging someone tightly or slapping them with a trout, actions are used all the time.
Today, we're going to look at how to add popup actions to your copy of
mIRC. For this, I'll be using mIRC version 5.8, though most of what I have to say will apply to older versions.
But what exactly is a popup action? That's a good question. A regular action in IRC is created by typing:
/me
followed by the action. The /me is replaced by your nickname after you hit enter, so you should type as if you're speaking about yourself in the third person. If my nickname was juliebug (as it usually is), and I wanted to say that I was dancing around to the latest Barenaked Ladies album while chatting, I could say:
/me dances around, listening to the new Barenaked Ladies album.
It would show up as:
* juliebug dances around, listening to the new Barenaked Ladies album.
That's a regular action. A popup action is simply a quick and easy way to do an action to someone, like hugging, slapping, snuggling or the like.
By default, mIRC comes with a single popup action. You can see it by opening mIRC, going to your favourite channel, left clicking on your (or someone else's) nickname once, then right clicking on that name and then selecting the "Slap!" option. [see screenshots 1, 2, 3 and 4 if you don't have mIRC handy.]
