The Story
(updated September 28th, 2001)
On September 25th, 2001, About.com laid off 300+ Guides, including me, Julie Martin. I had run the Chatting Online site since October of 1997 - nearly four years.
Part of what these 300+ Guides were told:
"This focus includes reducing the number of GuideSites on the About Network. Unfortunately your site is one we have chosen to remove from our current product offering. As you might imagine, this is a very difficult decision to make. We wish to thank you for all of your efforts to date."
These sites will not just stand empty on the network, waiting for a new Guide like many sites have in the past. These 300+ sites will be removed from the network ENTIRELY. This is why all Chatting Online chatters are affected. The Chatting Online site will be removed from the About network. This was not my choice, it was a management decision that cost me my job and you your chatrooms. Both chatrooms have been PASSWORDED at About.com, meaning no one can access them. They will be deleted shortly.
Because I hate thinking of all these chatters not being together anymore, I have invited all of you to join me at this website (www.goodchatting.com). You can download mIRC (for Windows) or ircle (for Macs) and find instructions on finding the chatroom here. It's pretty easy when you get the hang of it, and it's simpler than ChatSpace, I promise! Or, if you like, you can use our Java Chat, which will connect you right to the new chatroom.
Please tell all your friends to come by. It's free and you can register your nickname and stuff. More instructions will be forthcoming!
Thank you all so much for four years of great chatting. Let's keep it up here.
Why is there a PayPal Donate button on the site?
Though I do have a new job, I am digging myself out of the debt that being unemployed for four months caused. This IRC server costs me money every month and the Java applet for chat which I have registered for your use cost me $50 out of my own pocket. You're free to donate or not, but please keep in mind that this isn't free for me.
